James Connolly

Our History

In 1912 James Connolly proposed a motion that the Irish Congress of Trade Unions should establish a political wing. The motion, supported by William O’Brien and James Larkin, was passed and led to the formation of the Labour Party.

Our Party Structures

Party Leader

The Leader of the Labour Party is directly elected by the members of the Labour Party. Elections occur six months after a general election, if the Party decides not to go into government.

The Executive Board is in charge of the managerial functions of the Party, such as Party finances, ratification of election candidates and approval of standing orders.

When you join the Labour Party you will be assigned to a branch and a constituency based on where you live. Labour Party branches are a vital unit of our Party.

Sections

There are a number of Party Sections for members to get involved in.  All Party Sections have different areas of focus, ranging from campaigning on issues that impact on women to youth activism.

Party Sections offer members a different way to meet fellow comrades across the country, with regular events, policy formulations, campaigns and social events.
